Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has publicly addressed his legal dispute with Louisiana State University for the first time, stating that his primary attention is now on the upcoming regular season rather than the proceedings with his alma mater.

The dispute originated after LSU allowed sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett to wear the No. 5 jersey, a number previously associated with Daniels during his Heisman Trophy-winning season in 2023. Although the university never formally retired the number, Daniels filed a cease-and-desist order on 12 August, asserting that the institution could no longer use his name, image or likeness.

Daniels, who received his first snaps of the preseason in a loss to the Detroit Lions, indicated that he considers the matter sufficiently addressed through a previous statement. “I posted that. The statement is out,” he said. “But for me, now, I am just really focused on Commander football. I’ve said everything I had to say within the statement, and now I was really just getting ready for Week 1.”

The Commanders are scheduled to open their season against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, 13 September. This matchup carries historical weight for Washington, which has not lost a season opener to a division opponent since a 32-27 defeat to the Eagles in 2019, a season that concluded with a 3-13 record.

Since Daniels became the starting quarterback in 2024, the Commanders have split their season openers against division rivals. The team lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2024 before securing a victory over the New York Giants in 2025.

As the regular season approaches, the focus for the Commanders remains on on-field performance, with Daniels aiming to translate his preseason preparation into a strong start against the Eagles.
