NYPD reports injuries to five officers and significant property damage following Knicks’ NBA Finals defeat

Chaos erupted in Manhattan on Monday night following the New York Knicks’ first defeat in the NBA Finals since late April, resulting in eight arrests and five injuries to New York Police Department (NYPD) officials. The violence occurred at a watch party near Bryant Park, where a crowd of approximately 7,000 people became increasingly destructive after the game concluded.

The event was organised by Zohran Mamdani’s office after the official watch party at Madison Square Garden was cancelled for security concerns. Although the Bryant Park gathering was initially capped at 5,000 registrations, attendance swelled significantly. Police stated that the crowd became "increasingly rowdy, violent, and destructive," with individuals refusing multiple orders to clear the streets.

Officers reported that the crowd took over 42nd Street, blocking vehicular traffic and causing significant disruptions. Fans climbed on police vehicles, scaffolding, light poles, and trucks, causing what police described as "significant damage." Some individuals pulled trees and bus signs from the ground and threw them, while others threw glass objects at each other and at officers.

The NYPD confirmed that 21 people were taken into custody during the incident. Eight individuals were arrested and charged, including two for assault on a police officer and one for attempted assault on an officer. The remaining 13 detainees were released with criminal court summons.

Social media videos showed multiple fights breaking out in the streets surrounding the watch party. The unrest occurred despite heightened security measures around President Trump’s appearance at Madison Square Garden. Police described the behaviour of the crowd as "incredibly reckless," noting the sustained disorderly conduct that characterised the evening.
