Mandalay airport flights halted after reported drone attack
International flights from Tada-U International Airport were cancelled for two days after authorities reported an attempted drone attack.
International flights from Myanmar’s Tada-U International Airport, which serves Mandalay, were cancelled on 11 and 12 September after the military-backed government reported an attempted drone attack.
Myanmar Airways International said domestic services would be transferred to a nearby airport until further notice for operational reasons.
The state-run Global New Light of Myanmar reported that security forces had thwarted an alleged attack by the People’s Defence Force, saying six “suicide drones” had been fired at the airport.
Authorities reported no casualties or damage to vehicles or runways. Those claims, the reported attack and the identity of those responsible could not be independently verified.
Myanmar has been in armed conflict since the military removed Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government in February 2021. Military and resistance forces have both used drones during the conflict.
