Maia identifies Garry’s cognitive edge as key to challenging Makhachev
Demian Maia argues that Ian Garry’s adaptability and high fight IQ, rather than physical attributes, offer the best path to defeating Islam Makhachev at UFC 330.
Demian Maia has identified Ian Garry’s cognitive adaptability as the primary factor that could enable the Irish welterweight to upset Islam Makhachev for the UFC title. Speaking ahead of the main event at UFC 330 on 15 August in Philadelphia, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu legend emphasised that Garry’s capacity to rapidly learn and execute new techniques distinguishes him from other contenders.
Maia, who has assisted Garry in training since a seminar in Barcelona in 2023, detailed the structure of their recent preparation. He travelled to Spain last week to conduct an intensive camp focused specifically on grappling exchanges against Makhachev. Following this session, Garry returned to England to complete his final camp phase with coach John Hathaway, who also competed in the UFC welterweight division.
While acknowledging Garry’s physical advantages, including his reach and cardio, Maia argued that his fight IQ is the decisive element. He cited a specific instance from Garry’s previous bout against Carlos Prates, where Maia taught a takedown variation during fight week. Garry executed this new technique successfully approximately 10 times during the contest, demonstrating an ability to read opponents and adapt quickly under pressure.
Maia did not underestimate the challenge posed by Makhachev, describing the Dagestani champion as one of the greatest fighters of all time. He noted that Makhachev’s grappling proficiency is of such an elite standard that he could compete successfully in high-level no-gi Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournaments. This assessment underscores the magnitude of the task facing Garry, who enters the bout as a significant underdog against the number one pound-for-pound fighter.
The bout is scheduled for 15 August at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. Maia confirmed he will be in Garry’s corner on fight night, alongside Diego Lima, John Hathaway, and Paulo Mauricio Strauch. The outcome of this historical title dispute will test whether Garry’s strategic adaptability can overcome Makhachev’s dominant grappling record.
