Madrid derby tests Real’s control as Atletico chase Barcelona

Atletico Madrid will host Real Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium on Sunday, 20 September, in a derby shaped by the early La Liga title race. Real trail unbeaten leaders Barcelona by three points, while Atletico sit third.

Atletico have won their past two matches, beating Real Sociedad 3–0 before a 4–0 victory over Osasuna. Diego Simeone said his side controlled the Osasuna match after recovering from two earlier defeats.

Real arrive after a dramatic 3–2 win at Elche, where they surrendered a two-goal lead before Carlos Espi scored in stoppage time. The result extended their positive run but also renewed concerns about their ability to manage matches.

Real coach Jose Mourinho said his team must improve its control and defensive performance. He said Real had allowed matches that appeared settled to become difficult after failing to take further chances.

Both teams face selection questions. Atletico have doubts over Julian Alvarez, Pablo Barrios and Alexander Sorloth, while Real are without Eder Militao, Rodrygo and Ferland Mendy through injury. Real won the previous meeting 3–2 in March, while Atletico prevailed 5–2 in September 2025.
