MacIntyre admits swing adjustment backfired ahead of FedEx Cup playoffs

Scottish golfer Robert MacIntyre has announced a break from competition to address technical issues that have hampered his 2026 season, with the player revealing that a swing adjustment intended to improve his approach play has had the opposite effect. The professional stated on social media that the change, implemented after the Texas Open, led to inconsistent results and a notable deterioration in his iron play despite statistical gains in other areas of his game.
MacIntyre, who recently became a father, is utilising the time before the FedEx Cup playoffs to rest and work with Titleist on equipment tweaks. He acknowledged on X that while searching for equipment-based improvements, he neglected the basic fundamentals of his golf swing, a move he described as having "backfired." The golfer noted that since the US Open, tweaking his irons with Titleist has yielded far better results, offering a path to recovery before the postseason begins.
Statistical data from the 2026 season highlights the disparity in MacIntyre’s performance across different facets of his game. He has gained 0.63 strokes to the field with his putting, an improvement of 0.3 from the previous year, and has gained 0.25 strokes off the tee. However, his iron play has shifted significantly; where he gained over 0.3 strokes on approach in 2025, he has lost strokes to the field in 2026, creating what he identified as a glaring hole in his game.
The technical struggles have coincided with a turbulent period on the course, including a code of conduct warning for slamming a club into a tee box at The Open and criticism for showing a middle finger at Augusta National during The Masters. MacIntyre reached contention at the US Open, where he was defeated by JJ Spaun, and finished tied third at his home Scottish Open, where he gained 2.5 strokes on approach. Despite these flashes of form, he lost ground on approach at The Open the following week.
MacIntyre is scheduled to return for the FedEx Cup playoffs, aiming for his first win of the 2026 season. His recent form at the Scottish Open provided a promising sign, though the inconsistency at The Open underscored the need for the current hiatus. The break allows him to spend time with his newborn son and refine his game with the support of Titleist equipment ahead of the critical playoff stretch.
