LSU defeated Clemson 51–10 on Saturday night in Lane Kiffin’s debut as head coach, opening the season with a commanding performance against Dabo Swinney’s team.
The result was reported by Yahoo Sports as the largest defeat of Swinney’s Clemson tenure, which began in 2008. LSU led 38–8 in first downs and finished with 644 total yards, while Clemson managed 145.
Christopher Vizzina started at quarterback for Clemson before Tait Reynolds also took snaps later in the game. The Tigers scored one touchdown and one field goal, with David Eziomume providing the touchdown and Nolan Hauser converting the field goal.
LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt passed for 230 yards and ran for 113. Dilin Jones surpassed 100 rushing yards, while Winston Watkins Jr. recorded 110 receiving yards.
The loss extends a difficult recent pattern for Clemson, which has reportedly lost four consecutive season openers and five of its past six. The immediate task for Swinney’s programme is to prevent the result from setting the direction of the season.
