Logano Climbs to Ninth in Standings After Richmond Victory

Joey Logano has moved into ninth place in the NASCAR Cup Series standings following a victory at Richmond Raceway on Saturday night. The win marks a significant turnaround for the three-time champion, who was languishing in 20th place just eight races ago. Logano led 95 of the 400 laps, including the final 25, to secure the triumph and improve his prospects for a spot in the postseason Chase.
While Logano has not yet secured a permanent position in the playoff field, his current standing leaves him with two races remaining in the regular season to solidify his position. His recent form includes three top-three finishes in his last four races, a stark contrast to the two third-place finishes recorded in the first 20 events of the season. This surge has been orchestrated alongside crew chief Paul Wolfe, with Logano also noting strong performances at Atlanta and Indianapolis.
Chase Briscoe finished second, trailing Logano by 0.392 seconds after leading a race-high 171 laps. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver expressed frustration at the outcome, noting that a single error near the end cost him the victory. Despite the loss, Briscoe, along with Chase Elliott and Christopher Bell, has already clinched their spots in The Chase, leaving nine spots still open for the remaining competitors.
Austin Cindric and Shane van Gisbergen secured third and 14th place respectively, gaining vital points buffers ahead of the final regular-season races at New Hampshire and Daytona. Cindric holds a 63-point lead over their primary challenger, Ryan Preece, who finished 17th after being caught a lap down during a caution. Van Gisbergen sits 50 points ahead of Preece, who remains in a competitive but inconsistent position for the remaining playoff spots.
Kyle Larson finished sixth in the Cup Series race before travelling to Iowa to win the rain-delayed Knoxville Nationals sprint car event. Hendrick Motorsports arranged his flight to allow him to qualify and compete in the main event, overcoming previous weather-related failures to complete double-headers. Larson’s ability to pivot from the NASCAR track to the sprint car circuit highlights the logistical demands placed on drivers during this period of the season.
The NASCAR Cup Series regular season concludes with upcoming events at New Hampshire and Daytona.
