Liverpool overturn Atlético Madrid to give Iraola winning Champions League start
Liverpool recovered from Marcos Llorente’s early goal to beat Atlético Madrid 2–1 at Anfield, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister completing the comeback.
Liverpool began their Champions League campaign with a 2–1 comeback victory over Atlético Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday, giving new manager Andoni Iraola a winning start in Europe’s top competition.
Atlético took the lead in the 17th minute when Julián Álvarez played in Marcos Llorente, who lifted the ball over Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson. France 24 reported that the goal continued Llorente’s strong record at Anfield.
Liverpool levelled five minutes before half-time through Dominik Szoboszlai, after Ronald Araujo supplied a backheeled pass. Alexis Mac Allister then put the home side ahead five minutes into the second half with a left-footed strike from outside the box.
Atlético were unable to find an equaliser, leaving Liverpool with successive victories after their win at Ipswich in the Premier League last week.
Iraola, making his Champions League coaching debut, praised the atmosphere at Anfield after the match. Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Arsenal also reportedly opened their campaigns with victories.
