Liverpool dismiss Arne Slot following fifth-place Premier League finish
Fenway Sports Group demands aggressive change as Dutch manager departs two years after securing 20th league title

Liverpool FC has confirmed the immediate dismissal of head coach Arne Slot, ending his two-year tenure at Anfield. The decision follows a fifth-place finish in the Premier League table, marking a significant departure from the club’s successful inaugural campaign in the 2024-25 season, during which Slot secured the club’s 20th league title.
In a statement released on Saturday, the club acknowledged the difficulty of the decision while emphasising that the dismissal was driven by a strategic requirement for a different approach. Owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) cited a need for an "aggressive" tactical shift, indicating dissatisfaction with the current direction of the team’s performance in their second season.
The club pointed to internal disharmony as a contributing factor to the change. Mohamed Salah was identified in the statement as the most outspoken player regarding dressing room tensions, reflecting broader discontent among the squad following a trophy-less second season that included damaging defeats to rivals such as Manchester United.
Despite the abrupt conclusion to his time at the club, Liverpool’s statement expressed gratitude for Slot’s achievements. The organisation noted that his talents were not in question and affirmed that he and his family would always be welcomed back at Anfield, framing the sacking as a pivot in strategy rather than a reflection of personal failure.
A process to appoint a new head coach is now underway. The club has not yet announced the identity of a successor or provided a specific timeline for the appointment, leaving the future leadership of the squad in transition as they seek to restore their competitive standing.
