Liverpool appoint Spaniard Iraola as new manager in place of Slot
Spanish manager arrives at Anfield following dismissal of Dutch boss who finished fifth

Liverpool has appointed Andoni Iraola as its new manager, replacing Arne Slot following the club’s failure to defend its Premier League title. The appointment comes after Slot was dismissed last Saturday, ending a two-year reign that concluded with a fifth-place finish and no trophies won. Iraola, who stepped down from his role at Bournemouth at the end of the season, is viewed as the club’s top target to reverse a period of declining performance.

British media report that Iraola has signed a two-year contract, although Liverpool has not officially confirmed the duration of the deal. The 43-year-old Spaniard expressed his enthusiasm for the position in a statement on the club’s official website, describing Liverpool as a "massive club" and one of the biggest in the world. He noted that the institution’s stature alone is sufficient to attract top managerial talent, stating he feels "really excited" about the opportunity.

Iraola arrives at Anfield after guiding Bournemouth to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League, securing the club’s first-ever qualification for the Europa League. His tenure at the south coast club saw a steady improvement in results, moving from 12th to ninth and finally sixth over three seasons. He earned praise for his tactical acumen and the development of young players such as Eli Junior Kroupi and Alex Scott, having previously managed Rayo Vallecano, Mirandés, and AEK Larnaca.

The appointment signals a shift in tactical approach, with Iraola expected to implement an urgent, aggressive, high-pressing style of play. This contrasts with Slot’s more controlled method and aligns with the "heavy metal football" associated with former manager Jürgen Klopp. The call for a return to this intense style was recently amplified by star forward Mohamed Salah, who had heaped pressure on Slot during his final months in charge.

Slot’s departure follows a turbulent second season where Liverpool collapsed from late September onward, finishing 25 points behind champions Arsenal. Despite a strong start in his debut season that included winning the league title, Slot was unable to halt the club’s slide. Factors contributing to the decline included the death of forward Diogo Jota in a car crash, a significant failure of the club’s recent transfer spending, and a deteriorating relationship with Salah. Iraola now inherits a squad that must rebuild under a new strategic direction.
