Little League International defies court order to send Boerne to World Series
The governing body cites player eligibility jurisdiction and logistical impossibilities as it proceeds with Boerne’s qualification despite a temporary restraining order reinstating Tulsa National.
Little League International has confirmed that Boerne Little League will advance to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, effectively disregarding a judicial injunction that sought to reinstate Tulsa National in the Southwest Regional. The decision marks a direct collision between organisational governance and local court authority, with the international body asserting its exclusive jurisdiction over player eligibility and tournament forfeits.
The controversy began when Boerne defeated Ascension Parish 4-1 on Monday, a result initially recognised by Little League International as the championship game of the Southwest Regional. This victory was predicated on the earlier removal of Tulsa National from the tournament due to the use of an ineligible player. However, Tulsa National challenged this disqualification in court, resulting in a judge granting a temporary restraining order later that same day.
The court’s ruling effectively reinstated Tulsa National, theoretically requiring a new championship match between the two teams on Tuesday. Despite this judicial intervention, Little League International announced it would not comply with the order. The organisation maintains that it holds full authority regarding eligibility disputes and the enforcement of forfeits, a stance that prioritises its internal regulatory framework over the temporary legal relief granted to the Oklahoma-based team.
Beyond the jurisdictional dispute, the international body highlighted significant logistical barriers that would have made a replay of the championship unfeasible. Boerne families had already departed Waco in preparation for travel to Williamsport, and the team’s pitching staff had utilised its most effective players during the Monday contest. Under Little League rules, these pitchers would be ineligible for use against Tulsa National, creating an insurmountable competitive imbalance if the game were to be replayed.
Consequently, Boerne Little League will proceed to the United States without returning to Waco. Reports indicate the team has the full support of Little League International as it prepares for the World Series, which is scheduled to commence on 19 August. The status of Tulsa National’s legal challenges remains uncertain, with no clear indication of further avenues to pursue its qualification amidst the tight tournament timeline.
