Lions lean on Cover 3 as defence seeks to curb long passes
Detroit has increased its use of zone coverage through three games, but has still conceded more 20-yard passes than any other team.

The Detroit Lions have shifted towards zone coverage early in the 2026 season, with defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard pointing to the need to limit explosive passes and give defenders more chances to play the ball.
Cover 3 has accounted for 47.7 per cent of Detroit’s coverage through three games, up from 30.8 per cent in 2025, according to TruMedia. The approach marks a change for a defence known for its man coverage under former coordinator Aaron Glenn.
The results remain mixed. Detroit has allowed 16 passes of 20 or more yards, the most in the league so far this season. Against the New York Jets in Week 3, the Lions gave up seven explosive plays, including six passes, down from an average of 11.5 against the New Orleans Saints and Buffalo Bills.
Sheppard said the team’s self-scouting focused on reducing explosive passes, particularly through the air. He said a more zone-oriented defensive look could encourage shorter throws, allowing defenders to rally to the ball.
Turnovers are also part of the rationale. Detroit has recorded two interceptions in three games, both against New Orleans. The figures cover only the opening three games of the season, and do not yet show whether the coverage shift will deliver the results Sheppard wants.
