Leeds United Women commenced their 2026/27 FA Women’s National League Division One North season with a decisive 7-0 victory against Thornaby Women at the BD Community Stadium. The result marks a strong start for the Whites, who demonstrated tactical cohesion and clinical finishing in the opening fixture of the campaign.
The match was officiated by referee Martin Flynn and featured a Leeds lineup that included new signings Holly Mears and Izzy Dean, with Ella Harris named on the bench. Mears started in goal, while Dean played alongside established squad members in a side that controlled the tempo from the early stages.
Thornaby Women, captained by Jennifer Knowles, began with intent, pressing for an early opener. Faye Dale tested the Leeds defence with a strike from the edge of the area, but it passed wide of the far post. Leeds responded swiftly, with Amy Woodruff forcing a save from Thornaby goalkeeper Elen Valentine after latching onto a headed flick-on from Chloe Dixon.
The deadlock was broken just before the half-hour mark when Woodruff finished a well-worked move. Darcie Greene had driven into the centre from the left flank, locating Drew Greene on the opposite wing, whose low cross was met by Woodruff to beat the keeper. Shortly after, Thornaby’s defensive structure faltered, resulting in an own goal. A cross from Shauna Legge struck Knowles, deflecting into the net to make it 2-0.
Leeds doubled their advantage in the 40th minute with a powerful long-range strike from Darcie Greene, who fired into the top corner from 30 yards out. The hosts continued to dominate, with Drew Greene adding a fourth goal shortly after, capitalising on a rebound following a strike by Alice Hughes that hit the post. Chloe Dixon extended the lead to 5-0 before the interval, curling a half-volley into the net.
The second half saw Leeds maintain their pressure, with Woodruff scoring her second goal in stoppage time to complete her brace. The final tally included two own goals from Knowles, who also appeared in the Thornaby starting lineup alongside Dale and Legge. Substitutions were made by both sides, with Thornaby bringing on Nanga and Rodgers, while Leeds introduced Waldron and Smith.
