LeBron James delays NBA future decision until late June or July
The 41-year-old free agent indicated on his 'Mind the Game' podcast that he has not yet begun the process of determining his next steps, with an official decision likely to come after the NBA free agency period commences on 30 June.

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has signalled that he will not make an official decision regarding his basketball future until late June or July, delaying the resolution of his free agency status. Speaking on his 'Mind the Game' podcast, the 41-year-old indicated that he has not yet begun the process of determining his next steps, prioritising a family vacation following Memorial Day instead.
James, who is currently a free agent, stated that his immediate focus is on personal time rather than career negotiations. He told listeners, “I haven’t really even thought about it too much” and “I haven’t really even gotten to that point.” The Lakers star noted that he intends to take his family vacation after Memorial Day, which remains the primary matter at the forefront of his mind at this stage.
The delay comes as the NBA approaches its free agency window, which officially begins on 30 June at 6 p.m. New York time. Contract signings will be permitted from 12:00 p.m. Eastern time on 6 July. James suggested that he may make a decision during the window from late June through August, once he has had time to assess his options and determine whether he wishes to continue playing at a high level.
His agent, Rich Paul, previously stated that both parties are focused on evaluating what is best for the former Hall of Famer to win another NBA championship. While James retains control over his destiny, his prolonged absence from the decision-making process may impact the Lakers’ ability to secure other free agents and manage their roster around new signing Luka Doncic.
The Lakers are currently navigating a significant transition period, with approximately $50 million in salary cap space available. The franchise is seeking to build chemistry with the 27-year-old Doncic and other new players while managing potential upgrades. James’ delay in announcing his future leaves the team in a state of uncertainty as they prepare for the upcoming free agency period.
