This disclosure marks the first instance in which two Chinese mathematicians are set to receive the prestigious award in the same edition, a development that would represent a significant milestone for mathematics in China if the results are validated.
The discovery highlights the role of artificial intelligence in uncovering digital oversights. Codex, an AI tool developed by OpenAI, was instrumental in identifying the concealed fields within the ICM 2026 schedule. If the list is confirmed on 23 July, Hong Wang will become the third female mathematician in history to receive the Fields Medal.
