Latin America unites to cheer against Argentina in FIFA World Cup final
Political resentment, perceived referee bias, and historical grievances drive unusual regional solidarity against South American side

Fans across Latin America are rallying behind Spain and Lamine Yamal to defeat Argentina and Lionel Messi in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, marking a significant break from the region's traditional solidarity with South American teams. This shift in sentiment is attributed to perceptions of preferential treatment for Argentina by FIFA referees, political resentment towards Argentine President Javier Milei, and historical grievances regarding racism. While some supporters maintain regional loyalty, the prevailing sentiment in countries including Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia favours Spain.

A viral photoshopped image depicts Lamine Yamal wearing a Brazilian jersey with the caption “The hope of the Brazilian people,” illustrating the widespread support for Spain among Brazilian fans. Brazilian fan Francisco Santos stated a preference for Spain becoming two-time champions over Argentina becoming four-time champions, citing perceived referee assistance for Argentina. Critics argue that Argentina has benefited from favourable calls, including penalties and disciplinary decisions against opponents, even when such rulings have been endorsed by FIFA and independent experts.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum jokingly asked journalists which team they were supporting in the final during a media conference, highlighting the political dimension of the event. In Mexico City, police officer Antonio Lopez acknowledged Messi as a legend but expressed frustration with perceived institutional help for the team. “If referees are going to help you, I don’t,” Lopez said, reflecting a broader view among fans that the team’s success has been aided by external factors rather than solely on-pitch performance.

National politics has also fuelled resentment, with many Latin Americans expressing dislike for Argentine President Javier Milei. Rachid Sjoberg, an agricultural laboratory operator in Santiago, stated that the prospect of Milei boasting about a World Cup victory did not sit well with him. Additionally, historical grievances regarding racism have surfaced, including accusations of racist chants by Argentine fans and incidents involving black players. FIFA condemned racism during the tournament after an Argentinian supporter directed abusive language at a black US influencer during a livestream.

Spain reached the final by defeating France in the semi-final, with goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro. This victory extends Spain’s winning streak against France to three consecutive major tournament matches, including the 2024 European Championship and the 2025 UEFA Nations League semifinals. Preparations for the final were disrupted for the Spanish side, with their final outdoor training session in New Jersey cancelled due to storms, forcing players to conduct indoor warm-ups. Meanwhile, a fernet brand launched an advert with the slogan “We are unbearable,” featuring fans in a therapy circle complaining about Argentina’s passion, capitalising on the anti-Argentine sentiment.
