Kyiv hit by ballistic missile barrage as casualty reports diverge
Preliminary figures from the city military administration indicate one fatality and seven injuries, though Mayor Vitali Klitschko has not confirmed deaths amid ongoing emergency operations.
Russia has launched a major ballistic missile attack on Kyiv, igniting fires across multiple residential and commercial sites in the Ukrainian capital. The overnight strike, confirmed by Ukraine’s air force, resulted in explosions heard across the city, with an AFP journalist noting that the force of one blast was sufficient to trigger car alarms in the city centre.
According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, fires broke out at a dormitory, a residential block, and a supermarket. He confirmed that emergency services had been deployed to manage the situation and reported that at least seven people were injured, with one individual receiving treatment at the scene.
Discrepancies have emerged regarding the fatality count. The city military administration stated on Telegram that preliminary information indicated one person had been killed. However, Mayor Klitschko did not report any deaths in his public messages, leaving the final casualty toll unverified by the city’s primary executive authority.
The attack follows a recent escalation in cross-border strikes, including Ukrainian drone operations targeting e-commerce warehouses in Russia’s Moscow and Tambov regions. Those drone strikes resulted in at least eight fatalities and significant fire damage in Russia, while Russian retaliatory strikes on the same day killed at least two people in Ukraine.
As the conflict enters its fourth year, Moscow has increasingly utilised ballistic missiles against Kyiv and other locations. In response, Kyiv has warned of dwindling stocks of interceptor missiles, complicating air defence efforts as both sides continue to resort to long-range strikes.
