Protests in Madrid over the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal have broadened into calls for stronger social protections against similar cases, according to France 24.
Abascal was evicted on Wednesday from her long-term apartment in the Retiro quarter after her lease expired. She had lived there since the 1950s.
Demonstrators have carried signs reading “Maricarmen, you are not alone” and “Ni una Maricarmen más” — “Not one more Maricarmen”. France 24 reported protests were ongoing on 26 September.
The demonstrations began as efforts to stop Abascal’s eviction and have shifted towards preventing similar cases. France 24 describes Retiro as a desirable area near the Prado Museum and reports a housing deficit in Madrid.
Spain’s government and Madrid council blame each other over the housing deficit, the report says. It does not detail their arguments.
