Kremlin says Trump and Putin back swift end to Ukraine war
The Kremlin says the leaders supported ending the conflict quickly, but reported no concrete peace agreement or diplomatic breakthrough.
US President Donald Trump told Russian President Vladimir Putin he wanted a swift end to the war in Ukraine during a phone call lasting about an hour, according to the Kremlin.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said Putin supported Trump’s position and told him what he believed the United States could do to help end the conflict. Putin also provided his assessment of the battlefield, Ushakov said.
The call followed weekend visits to Moscow and Kyiv by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who were seeking to revive stalled peace efforts. Their diplomacy raised the possibility of renewed three-way talks involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States, but the Kremlin’s readout did not mention such a meeting.
The Kremlin said a rapid end to the war could create prospects for restoring US-Russia relations, including expanded trade and economic ties. Ushakov said Trump wanted a breakthrough during his presidency.
Russia and Ukraine remain far apart over how to end the conflict, while attacks by both sides have intensified in recent months. Ushakov said the leaders agreed to continue prisoner exchanges and remain in contact, but no concrete peace agreement was reported.
