Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain ignores handshake after Sunrisers Hyderabad victory

Virat Kohli has deliberately refused to shake hands with Travis Head following Sunrisers Hyderabad’s 55-run victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League. The incident, which occurred on Friday, marks a significant breach of customary post-match protocol and highlights the intensifying friction between the two franchises as they prepare for the upcoming playoffs.

The confrontation originated during Bengaluru’s chase of a target of 256 runs. Kohli, opening the batting, exchanged heated words with Head and was observed mockingly gesturing regarding the ‘Impact Player’ rule. The gesture referenced the league’s substitution policy, which allows teams to replace a player during the match, often utilised to bring on specialist bowlers after a batter’s innings—a strategy frequently employed by Hyderabad when Head departs the crease.

Kohli challenged Head to come down and bowl, a challenge the Australian batter, who is primarily a specialist batsman, later accepted. Head bowled an over later in the innings and successfully dismissed Bengaluru captain Rajat Patidar. Kohli himself was dismissed shortly after his confrontation, scoring 15 runs off 11 balls before being removed from the crease.

The tension culminated at the conclusion of the match when the players lined up for the traditional post-match greetings. Head extended his hand for a handshake, but Kohli looked straight ahead and walked past him without acknowledgment. The snub underscores the volatile atmosphere that developed on the pitch, where tempers had already flared during the middle overs of the contest.

The result leaves both teams with equal points in the league standings, but Royal Challengers Bengaluru retains the top position due to a superior net run rate. Sunrisers Hyderabad finishes in third place. Both sides have now qualified for the IPL playoffs, which are scheduled to commence on Wednesday.
