Kohli issues ultimatum on ODI future, demands clarity from selectors
The 37-year-old criticises lack of transparency from head coach Gautam Gambhir ahead of England series

Virat Kohli has issued a stark warning regarding his future in Indian One Day International cricket, stating he will not remain in the national team if he is required to constantly prove his value. Speaking on a Royal Challengers Bengaluru podcast, the 37-year-old called for honesty and clarity from selectors and head coach Gautam Gambhir, insisting that the environment must be supportive and free of uncertainty.
Kohli, who retired from T20 Internationals in 2024 and Test cricket in 2025, currently plays only ODIs for India. He expressed interest in participating in the 2027 ODI World Cup but emphasised that his continued involvement depends on being valued without the need for constant justification. He described the current situation as unsustainable, comparing the ambiguity to a workplace where employees are told they are valued but subsequently have their methods questioned based on results.
The former captain criticised the lack of clear communication from the board, noting that head coach Gautam Gambhir has not yet provided a definitive answer regarding the future of Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma in ODI cricket. Kohli stated that if the environment feels complicated or if he is made to feel his worth is in question, that space is "not meant" for him. He urged officials to either be upfront about his standing or remain silent to allow him to play.
Despite the off-field uncertainty, Kohli affirmed his physical readiness for the game. He recalled his recent return to the Vijay Hazare Trophy during the 2025-26 season, where he played two matches for Delhi, scored a century, and became the fastest batter to complete 16,000 List A runs. He described his motivation for playing domestic cricket as stemming from a love for the game rather than a need to prove himself to others, noting he is prepared to field 50 overs.
Kohli is expected to next play in India’s ODI series against England from July 14 to July 19. With fewer ODIs being played internationally, his appearances for the national team have become limited. However, he maintained that his perspective on the game remains simple and honest, asserting that he works as hard as anyone else and plays in the right way. He concluded that if he can add value to the environment, he will be seen, but if he must constantly prove his worth, he will step away.
