Everything that will decide Knicks-Spurs
New York enters on historic winning streak while San Antonio relies on young core

The 2026 NBA Finals are set to begin on Wednesday at 8:30 ET, broadcast on ABC, as the New York Knicks face the San Antonio Spurs. The Knicks advanced to the championship series after winning 11 consecutive playoff games, marking their first Finals appearance since 1999. The Spurs secured their spot by defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder in seven games, ending OKC’s bid to become the first team since the 2017-2018 Golden State Warriors to win back-to-back titles.

New York enters the series with significant momentum, holding an 11-game winning streak that includes an average point differential of 23.8 points. This performance is described as the greatest 11-game stretch in NBA history, covering both regular and postseason play since the league’s inception 80 years ago. The Knicks also posted an offensive rating of 123.3 in the playoffs, the highest intraconference mark by an Eastern Conference champion since the current playoff format began in 2003.

San Antonio’s path to the Finals was marked by a hard-fought series against the Thunder, concluding with a Game 7 victory on the Monday prior to the Finals. The Spurs rely on a young core featuring Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper, who have no prior collective playoff experience. Wembanyama has drawn comparisons to historic performances after averaging 41 points and 24 rebounds in Game 1 against OKC, a stat line reminiscent of LeBron James’ 2007 Eastern Conference finals performance.

Key individual battles will define the series, with Jalen Brunson leading the Knicks’ offense. Brunson averaged 26.9 points and 6.6 assists in 36.1 minutes during the playoffs. For the Spurs, Wembanyama is expected to be the primary driver, having averaged 24.7 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks in three regular-season matchups against New York. The Knicks’ defensive personnel, including Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby, have previously limited Wembanyama’s impact in regular-season encounters.

Roster stability and rest periods present contrasting narratives for both teams. The Knicks have nine days of rest before the series begins, while a veteran NBA scout suggested the Spurs might suffer from an emotional hangover after their intense series win. Roster uncertainty looms for New York, which signed seven free agents this summer, including Jose Alvarado, Landry Shamet, Mitchell Robinson, and Jordan Clarkson. In contrast, the Spurs retain their starting lineup and hold significant draft capital, including four picks in June’s draft and swap rights in three future drafts.
