Kaif names Iyer as frontrunner for India T20I captaincy
Mohammad Kaif cites IPL success and mutual understanding with Gautam Gambhir as key factors, while identifying Jasprit Bumrah as the ideal candidate if fitness permits.

Former India batter Mohammad Kaif has publicly endorsed Shreyas Iyer as the leading candidate to succeed Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif argued that Iyer is “miles ahead” of other contenders due to his proven leadership record in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and his ability to contribute significantly with the bat.
Kaif highlighted Iyer’s successful partnership with head coach Gautam Gambhir during Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) IPL 2024 title-winning campaign as a primary indicator of his capability. He also pointed to Iyer’s experience guiding Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to IPL finals, noting that the player’s understanding of Gambhir’s tactical patterns makes him a logical choice for the national side.
The endorsement comes amid speculation that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may alter the T20I leadership ahead of upcoming series in Ireland and England. While no official announcement has been made, Kaif suggested that if the selectors have decided to move away from the current World Cup-winning captain, appointing Iyer would be the most stable option to avoid disruption.
Kaif also addressed the status of other prominent names in the leadership conversation. He stated that the team management has effectively “moved past” Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill for the role. Regarding Gill, Kaif remarked that the batter “will not come back” to the captaincy, citing that he was “tried” and “did not score” sufficiently in the position.
While backing Iyer, Kaif reserved special praise for fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, identifying him as his first choice if fitness and availability were not constraints. Kaif noted Bumrah’s previous success captaining Mumbai Indians and his expressed desire to lead the side, stating that in terms of merit and experience, no one should be close to him if he is fit to play.
