Jellyfin 12.0 brings performance upgrades and new media features
The stable server release restructures key database records, adds episode alternate versions and moves most Bookshelf features into Jellyfin itself, but requires careful preparation before upgrading.
Jellyfin has released stable version 12.0, a major server update focused on database and browsing performance, books and comics support, interface changes, plugin updates and security fixes.
The release restructures playlists, collections and boxsets so each item is stored as an individual database row. Jellyfin says the change should improve tasks such as browsing, counting, editing and loading large collections, although the update does not specifically target library-scanning performance.
Alternate versions, previously limited to films, now support television episodes and associated resume data. Jellyfin has also moved most functionality from the Bookshelf plugin into the server, with additional features provided through ComicVine and GoogleBooks. The Bookshelf plugin is now deprecated.
Modern, previously described as experimental, is now the default layout for desktop and mobile users who have not selected another option. The previous interface has been renamed Legacy, while television devices continue to use the TV layout. Recommendation sources can now be selected per library, with ListenBrainz available for music suggestions, and plugins can add their own search results.
Jellyfin has changed its version-numbering scheme, with the server reporting 12.0.0 rather than using the previous “10.” prefix. The project warned that version-string parsers, deployment scripts and container pins may need adjustment. Security fixes address unsafe file access, setup-wizard re-entry, unsafe plugin package names, parental-control gaps and cross-site scripting issues in the web client.
Users must stop Jellyfin and make full manual backups of their data and configuration before upgrading. Direct upgrades require version 10.10.7 or any 10.11.x release; older installations must first move to 10.10.7. A full library scan is required after installation, and the first scan may take significantly longer. Third-party plugins built for 10.11 will not load until updated for version 12.0, while very old clients may also stop working.
