Jeffrey Archer, the author and former Conservative politician, has died aged 86, his publisher HarperCollins said. The publisher said he died peacefully at home on Monday, between writing sessions.

Archer served as a Conservative MP for five years and later became the party’s deputy chairman. He was made a life peer in 1992.

His political career was interrupted in 2001 when he was imprisoned for perjury and perverting the course of justice. An Old Bailey jury found he had lied in a libel action against the Star newspaper, in which he had been awarded £500,000 in damages.

Archer was released early in 2003 and returned to the House of Lords. He retired from the chamber in 2024.

HarperCollins has not given a cause of death.
