Jeff Gordon sweeps IROC exhibition races in Washington, D.C.

Jeff Gordon has completed a double victory in the International Race of Champions (IROC) exhibition races held on the streets of Washington, D.C. The 10-lap events, which served as a support act for the INDYCAR Freedom 250 Grand Prix, saw the four-time NASCAR Cup champion emerge victorious in both sessions.

The IROC format is designed to neutralise team and manufacturer advantages by pitting top drivers from various motorsport disciplines in equally prepared vehicles. For this event, the eight participants competed in identical Pontiac Firebirds. The field included former NASCAR drivers Gordon, Rusty Wallace, Bill Elliott, Bobby Labonte, and Kurt Busch, alongside former full-time INDYCAR drivers Tony Kanaan and Hélio Castroneves, and road-racer Tony Kendall.

The races took place on a 1.7-mile street circuit that incorporates Pennsylvania, Constitution, and Independence Avenues. Gordon, who previously competed in six IROC seasons from 1995 to 2000 with a single victory, noted that he moved from the rear of the field to the front during the second race to secure his second win.

Speaking to Fox Sports after the sweep, Gordon highlighted the significance of the event coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the United States. "Just being out here, being a part of this special event, the fans are everywhere, celebrating 250 years of this great country — this is super special," Gordon said.

The exhibition status of the races means the results do not count towards official championship points, though the event provided a nostalgic showcase for the drivers involved. Gordon described the experience as "a real honor" and stated that he was "truly blessed" to compete alongside what he called a group of legends.

A tape-delayed telecast of the IROC races is scheduled to air on FS1 at 10 a.m. Eastern Time on Sunday, preceding the main INDYCAR Freedom 250 Grand Prix.
