Japan mobilises resources as magnitude 6+ earthquake strikes Aomori
Prime Minister Toshihiro Nikai confirms emergency response efforts are underway following the tremor, with transport services suspended and no tsunami risk expected.

A magnitude 6+ earthquake struck Aomori Prefecture on 25 June 2026, registering a seismic intensity of 6-strong. The Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed that long-period ground motion at Level 2 was detected across Aomori, Hokkaido, Iwate, Miyagi, and Akita prefectures. Authorities have stated there is no risk of tsunami damage following the event.
Prime Minister Toshihiro Nikai announced that the government is mobilising all resources for emergency disaster response. The administration has prioritised immediate coordination to manage the aftermath of the tremor, ensuring that emergency protocols are activated across the affected regions.
Transport infrastructure has been significantly impacted by the seismic activity. Services on the Tohoku and Akita Shinkansen lines have been suspended, and some highways are affected. These disruptions are part of standard safety measures implemented to prevent accidents and allow for infrastructure inspections.
Despite the intensity of the ground motion, major mobile carriers have reported no communication disruptions. Operators are currently providing disaster message board services to assist residents in confirming the safety of family members and friends.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is scheduled to hold a press conference at 9:30 AM on the day of the event to provide further details regarding the seismic data and ongoing monitoring efforts.
