Japan heatstroke hospitalisations surge past 10,000 in weekly record

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency has confirmed that more than 10,000 people were transported to hospitals for heatstroke across Japan in the week ending July 19, 2026. This marks the first time the weekly total has surpassed the 10,000 threshold since the start of the year, representing a sharp escalation in public health impacts from extreme heat.
According to the agency’s summary, the figure represents a more than doubling of the previous week’s totals, indicating a rapid intensification of weather-related health risks. The surge in hospitalisations coincides with temperatures exceeding 40°C in Mie, Shizuoka, and Gifu prefectures, prompting strict official warnings against heatstroke in these regions.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a three-month forecast predicting high temperatures for August, with a possibility of further extreme heat days. Meteorologists have noted that the current trend suggests a sustained period of high heat, raising concerns about the capacity of local health services and the effectiveness of existing public safety measures as the summer progresses.
On July 21, 287 people were transported for suspected heatstroke in Tokyo alone, recording the highest single-day number for the year so far. The severity of the conditions has already disrupted public events, with multiple players in professional baseball’s second division reporting heatstroke symptoms during a match that was subsequently declared a no-game.
While the Fire and Disaster Management Agency monitors these transport statistics weekly, the data reflects only those cases severe enough to require hospitalisation. The long-term impact of the predicted high temperatures on hospitalisation rates remains uncertain, but the current trajectory suggests significant ongoing pressure on emergency medical services and public health infrastructure.
