Israel and Morocco agree to elevate diplomatic ties to embassy level
The agreement follows New York talks and includes plans to appoint ambassadors, conclude economic deals by year’s end and arrange reciprocal high-level visits.
Israel and Morocco have agreed to elevate their diplomatic missions to embassy level and appoint ambassadors following talks between their foreign ministers and the United States ambassador to the United Nations in New York.
The commitment was outlined in statements cited by France 24, which said the countries also reaffirmed their intention to establish full diplomatic, peaceful and friendly relations.
No timeline was provided for opening the embassies. The agreement therefore marks a planned escalation in diplomatic representation rather than completed embassy openings.
The two countries established diplomatic ties in 2020 under the US-brokered Abraham Accords, which normalised Israel’s relations with several Arab states. A similar commitment to elevate relations was announced during an Israeli foreign minister’s visit to Morocco in June 2022.
Israel and Morocco also said they would conclude a series of economic agreements by the end of the year. High-level reciprocal visits are expected in the coming months, although the statements did not provide further details.
