Ireland players plan Gaza tribute during Israel match
The squad voted by a significant majority to play in Debrecen, while one player withdrew in protest, Football Association of Ireland chief executive David Courell said.
Republic of Ireland players intend to wear black armbands recognising lives lost in the Gaza conflict during Sunday’s Nations League match against Israel in Debrecen, Hungary.
Football Association of Ireland chief executive David Courell said the squad had voted by a “significant majority” to play. One player withdrew from the squad in protest; the player’s identity has not been confirmed.
Courell said players also intend to refrain from some elements of the pre-match ceremony and make a significant charitable contribution from match fees for the Israel fixtures and the Austria match. No amount or recipient was specified.
The fixtures have prompted calls for Ireland to withdraw, including a “Stop The Game” campaign organised by Irish Sport for Palestine.
Ireland’s return fixture against Israel is scheduled for 4 October in Bačka Topola, Serbia.
