Meyer calls Ohio State’s No. 7 ranking a joke
The former Buckeyes coach says Ohio State belongs among the nation’s top three, while identifying red-zone offence, pass rush and run defence as concerns.
Urban Meyer has criticised Ohio State’s No. 7 position in the AP Top 25, arguing the Buckeyes should rank among the country’s top three. The former head coach made the assessment on Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff ahead of Ohio State’s Big Ten opener against Illinois.
Ohio State began the 2026 season ranked No. 1 and has dropped in the poll for two consecutive weeks, Fox Sports reported. The Buckeyes lost 24–23 to Texas after leading by 20 points late in the third quarter, then beat Kent State 59–3.
Meyer said the loss to Texas exposed weaknesses but gave the team time to address them. He pointed to red-zone offence, a pass rush that had recorded four sacks this season, and run defence after Ohio State allowed Texas 70 rushing yards.
The Buckeyes have five ranked match-ups remaining, against Iowa, Indiana, USC, Oregon and Michigan, according to Fox Sports.
