White Sox reach postseason after historic losing run as Pope jokes about divine help
Chicago has clinched a postseason berth after three straight 100-loss seasons and remains in the AL Central race.
Pope Leo XIV joked that he had “no comment” when asked whether divine intervention had helped the Chicago White Sox’s turnaround. “Great things happen in Chicago,” he added, according to Reuters.
The South Side-born pope, born Robert Prevost, grew up supporting the White Sox. His remarks came as the team secured a postseason berth after three consecutive seasons with at least 100 losses.
Chicago lost 101 games in 2023, 121 in 2024 and 102 in 2025. It is the first team in baseball history to reach the postseason after consecutive 100-loss seasons, according to CBS Sports.
The White Sox remain in contention for the AL Central title, one game behind the Cleveland Guardians with two games to play. Chicago holds the tiebreaker and can claim the division by drawing level with Cleveland.
A division title would also bring a bye through the Wild Card Series. The race remained unresolved at the time of publication.
