Iranian Football Delegation Denied Entry to Canada Amidst IRGC Inadmissibility Rules

An Iranian Football Federation delegation led by President Mehdi Taj was turned back at Toronto Pearson International Airport by Canadian immigration officials. Despite holding valid visas, the group comprising Taj, Secretary-General Hedayat Mombeni, and Deputy Secretary-General Hamed Momeni was refused entry and returned to Turkey on the first available flight. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, has resulted in Iran missing the scheduled FIFA Congress in Vancouver as well as the concurrent Asian Football Confederation congress.
Canadian authorities have stated that the denial was based on alleged ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and unacceptable behaviour, including insults directed at the Iranian nation's armed forces. This decision aligns with the Canadian government's long-standing policy designating the IRGC as a terrorist organisation since 2024. Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree reiterated that while specific cases cannot be discussed due to privacy laws, IRGC members remain inadmissible to Canada to protect national safety and the integrity of the immigration system.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand offered a partial explanation, describing the outcome as unintentional and suggesting a revocation of permission was the mechanism used, though she deferred to the Immigration Minister for official confirmation. The Iranian federation, however, attributes the departure to the unacceptable behaviour of immigration officials at the airport. This divergence in narrative highlights the diplomatic friction surrounding the event, which took place against a backdrop of escalating regional tensions following the launch of a war on Iran by the US and Israel in February.
