China maintains Asian Games diving run as Nagoya mayor apologises
Two more diving golds secured China’s 14th consecutive clean sweep, while Nagoya’s mayor apologised over reported accommodation and transport problems.
China won both remaining diving events on Wednesday, extending a run of Asian Games diving golds that the Al Jazeera report traces to the country’s first appearance in the sport at the Games in 1974. Chen Yiwen and Lian Junjie’s victories completed China’s 14th consecutive clean sweep.
The results brought China’s gold medal tally to 150, with four days remaining. Japan had 50 golds and South Korea 24 at the time of reporting.
Nagoya Mayor Ichiro Hirosawa apologised to athletes over reported inconveniences, including a shortage of beds and transport problems. Hirosawa, who is also acting chairman of the local organising committee, said organisers should reflect on the mishandling. The report says participants are staying in temporary wooden units, a cruise ship and hotels because the Games have no athletes’ village.
In other results, the Philippines’ Alexandra Eala reached the tennis semifinals after beating Taiwan’s Joanna Garland in straight sets. Her next opponent is China’s Wang Xiyu.
Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting advanced to the women’s 60kg boxing final, while South Korea and Japan reached the men’s football final. South Korea beat China 2-1; Japan advanced on penalties after drawing 1-1 with Uzbekistan.
