Iran plans Gulf talks on Strait of Hormuz in Oman

Iran says it will meet Iraq and coastal Gulf states in Oman on Monday to discuss the Strait of Hormuz, in a diplomatic effort Tehran says is intended to improve regional understanding and strengthen shared security.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry announced the planned meeting, while Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said the country remained committed to ensuring security of navigation in the strait. The ministry did not identify which Gulf states would attend.

The meeting follows reported discussions between Iran and Oman about shipping routes, mine clearance and short-term management of the waterway. The strait is a strategic route for oil shipping, but the precise status of any proposed arrangements remains unconfirmed in the supplied reporting.
