Apple’s iOS 27 introduces independent volume controls for iPhone alarms and timers, addressing the previous link between alarm and ringtone volume, according to Engadget.

Users can separate the settings by opening Settings, selecting Sounds & Haptics, and disabling “Match Ringtone Volume” under Alarms & Timers. A separate slider will then allow alarm and timer volume to be adjusted independently.

That means lowering the ringtone volume before bed will no longer reduce the volume of an alarm, allowing users to keep alarms loud while muting or lowering calls and alerts.

The update also reportedly adds separate controls for system alerts, including notifications and keyboard sounds. Users can also choose whether the iPhone’s physical volume buttons adjust ringtone volume or media playback.

The settings can be reversed by returning to Sounds & Haptics and re-enabling the relevant toggles. Engadget cautioned that iOS 27 remains subject to change, and beta software may contain bugs.

Apple has not provided a confirmed public release date in the source material. The company’s major software releases typically arrive in September alongside new devices, while a public beta is reportedly available.
