Intuitive Surgical (ISRG) Stock Has Plunged 33% in 2026. Here's Why One Fund Manager Remains Bullish -- and Why I Do, Too.
Analysts and fund managers maintain bullish outlook on robotic surgery specialist despite sharp 2026 decline

Shares of Intuitive Surgical have fallen 33% in 2026, driven by investor anxiety over intensifying competition from China and the potential disruption posed by artificial intelligence. The decline has pulled the market value of the robotic surgical systems specialist down from its previous highs, despite the company having averaged annual gains of 17% over the preceding decade.

Market concerns have been amplified by the rapid advancement of AI competitors, including OpenAI, whose ChatGPT has reached one billion monthly active users, placing it on par with Google’s Gemini app. While the broader US stock market has recently risen on news of the SpaceX IPO debut and Iran-US peace hopes, Intuitive Surgical has faced specific pressure regarding how these technological shifts might impact its market position.

Despite the sharp correction, the company’s forward price-to-earnings ratio currently stands at 35, significantly below its five-year average of nearly 54. This valuation gap has prompted fund managers and analysts to view the lower price as an attractive entry point for long-term investors, with most Wall Street analysts maintaining a buy rating on the stock.

Fundamental support for the bullish case remains strong, anchored by an installed base of more than 12,000 robotic surgery systems across over 70 countries. Recurring revenue from instruments, accessories, and servicing now accounts for approximately 75% of total revenue, providing a stable income stream that persists even when hospitals are not purchasing new capital equipment.

The Baron Health Care Fund has highlighted these strengths in a recent note, acknowledging headwinds such as the expiration of Affordable Care Act subsidies and expected Medicaid work requirements in 2027. However, the fund remains positive on the company’s long-term growth outlook, projecting that Intuitive Surgical can continue to grow revenue at a mid-teens rate for many years.

Intuitive Surgical is also expanding its footprint into new medical fields, including bronchoscopy and emergency surgeries, where its systems are seeing increased adoption. The company’s offerings are described as more polished and proven than those of emerging competitors, reinforcing its position in the $135 billion market-cap sector.

The Motley Fool, which holds positions in Intuitive Surgical including long January 2028 $520 calls and short January 2028 $530 calls, notes that while the stock was not included in its current top 10 list, the dynamic nature of the company presents opportunities for risk-tolerant investors. The source article, published by Yahoo Finance, reflects this sentiment, with author Selena Maranjian also holding a position in the stock.
