Artificial intelligence

Instacart has launched Clementine, an artificial-intelligence shopping assistant available across North America through its marketplace.

Users can ask Clementine for meal ideas, including budget-focused or high-protein dinners, and receive recipes with ingredient lists that can be added to a cart. Instacart says recommendations are based on products currently available at the selected store.

The assistant can apply preferences such as vegetarian, gluten-free or nut-free shopping, while allowing users to remove ingredients they already have. The company says Clementine can also restock staple items using information from previous orders.

Clementine can convert a photographed handwritten grocery list into an item list for a cart. Instacart says orders placed through the assistant typically exceed its reported average basket size of US$115, although that figure has not been independently verified.

Instacart has also partnered with other technology companies to integrate grocery shopping into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google Search’s AI Mode. The company suggests the convenience of AI-assisted shopping may encourage larger orders.
