India’s Galle win resets World Test Championship trajectory
A 165-run victory over Sri Lanka lifts India’s points percentage to 53.33%, keeping their bid for the 2027 final at The Oval alive despite remaining fifth in the standings.

India have secured a significant strategic reset in the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle following a 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test at Galle. The win, achieved in a rain-affected match that extended to the fifth day, marks the team’s first success since a 0-2 home series defeat to South Africa in November last year. This result interrupts a period of inconsistency and provides a crucial foundation for the remainder of the cycle.
The victory improves India’s points percentage (PCT) from 48.14 to 53.33, according to the updated WTC standings. While this gain is numerically modest, it is operationally significant as it keeps India’s qualification hopes for the 2027 final at The Oval intact. The team has now recorded five wins in 10 Tests during the current cycle, a performance level that must be sustained to challenge for the top two spots.
India currently sits fifth in the WTC table, trailing Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and Bangladesh. Australia leads the standings with a PCT of 77.77, despite a recent home defeat to Bangladesh, while South Africa follows at 75.00. New Zealand and Bangladesh occupy third and fourth places with PCTs of 72.22 and 66.67, respectively. Sri Lanka’s PCT dropped to 33.33 following their second defeat in five Tests, leaving them in sixth position.
The path to the 2027 final remains steep but navigable. Projected analysis indicates that if India wins all eight of their remaining Tests, their final PCT could reach 74.07%, placing them in a strong position to finish in the top two. Winning at least six of these remaining matches would also secure a very strong position for the final. Conversely, losing more than two of the remaining Tests would significantly compromise their chances of reaching the decider.
India’s immediate schedule includes one final Test in Sri Lanka before travelling to New Zealand for a two-Test series. The WTC campaign will conclude with the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia at home next year. These upcoming fixtures are critical junctures where India must convert their current momentum into the necessary points to overtake the teams ahead of them.
The 2027 Men’s World Test Championship final is scheduled for 9 June 2027 at The Oval. This date precedes the start of the 2027 Men’s Ashes series, which is set to begin at Trent Bridge on 18 June 2027. For India, the focus remains on the institutional requirement of accumulating points across the remaining eight Tests to ensure their presence in the final.
