The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have resolved a significant roster uncertainty by agreeing to a one-year, $30 million contract extension with defensive tackle Vita Vea. The deal, confirmed by Fox Sports, is fully guaranteed and secures $48 million over the next two seasons. This agreement resolves a trade request Vea submitted at the start of training camp, when he believed the parties were far from reaching an accord.

The extension increases Vea’s 2026 salary to $24 million, a $6 million rise from his previous figure. By locking in the two-time Pro Bowler through the 2027 season, the Buccaneers retain a key component of head coach Todd Bowles’ defensive scheme. Vea, who has spent his entire career with the team, was instrumental in the squad’s Super Bowl LV victory and remains a central figure in their efforts to reach the postseason after falling short last year.

In a separate development, the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots held a joint practice that highlighted the immediate impact of the recent A.J. Brown trade. Patriots quarterback Drake Maye delivered a strong performance, completing 16 of 19 passes, including a streak of 13 consecutive completions. Maye distributed the ball among several receivers, including Brown, and orchestrated a two-minute drill that resulted in a 52-yard field goal by Andy Borregales.

In contrast, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts struggled against the Patriots’ defence, completing 19 of 27 passes while throwing three interceptions. One of those interceptions was returned for a touchdown by the New England defence. Hurts is currently adjusting to offensive coordinator Sean Mannion, who marks his seventh playcaller in seven professional seasons.

The practice also served as a debut for Brown against his former team. The wide receiver caught seven passes from Maye, demonstrating immediate chemistry with the Patriots’ offence. Following the session, Brown revealed to reporters that he has not spoken to Hurts since the trade was finalised, despite the two having a personal connection as Hurts is the godfather to Brown’s daughter.

The Buccaneers’ decision to retain Vea underscores the team’s commitment to maintaining its defensive identity. With the contract dispute settled, Tampa Bay can focus on the upcoming season with its interior line intact, while the Eagles and Patriots continue to integrate their new personnel ahead of the regular season.
