India’s 2027 World Cup Strategy Tested Amid Selection Dilemmas
With Virat Kohli sidelined, the Indian cricket board faces critical decisions on batting combinations and veteran retention ahead of the South Africa tournament.

India’s preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa has entered a critical phase as the national team prepares to face Afghanistan in a three-match series commencing in Dharamshala on Saturday, 14 June 2026. The fixture serves as a strategic audition for the upcoming tournament, placing significant pressure on captain Shubman Gill to resolve selection uncertainties regarding veteran opener Rohit Sharma.
Sharma, aged 39, holds the record for the most ODI matches played by an Indian with 282 appearances, alongside 33 centuries and 11,577 runs. However, recent training sessions in Dharamshala have highlighted concerns regarding his physical readiness. The veteran captain adopted a subdued demeanor, skipping intense drills in favour of casual fielding practice, a marked departure from his usual energetic presence. He remained behind after the main session to work on slip catches with fielding coach T Dilip and wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan, suggesting a focus on maintaining form rather than building match fitness.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir has been closely involved in managing these dynamics, spending considerable time coaching Gill following the latter’s batting session. The selection landscape is further complicated by the absence of star batsman Virat Kohli, who has been ruled out of the series due to a hamstring injury. This injury has forced the management to rotate batting options, testing combinations that include KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, and Yashasvi Jaiswal in the top order.
Gill faces a complex leadership test, balancing respect for Sharma’s legacy with the need to look toward the future. During the previous World Cup cycle, Sharma publicly supported Gill’s selection over the more experienced Shikhar Dhawan. Now, the current captain must determine whether to persist with the veteran opener or explore a new pairing, potentially involving Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top of the order. A brief conversation between the two occurred on Friday after Gill inspected the pitch before departing for the team hotel.
Looking ahead to the final leg of the series, fast bowler Harshit Rana is expected to join the squad ahead of the third ODI in Chennai. BCCI sources indicate that Rana has been bowling nine to 10 overs daily at the National Cricket Academy and working on his batting. He is likely to be cleared by the Centre of Excellence on 17 June 2026 and will travel to Chennai immediately to join the team for the concluding match.
