India seek series dominance as Iyer’s tenure gains momentum against Zimbabwe

India are set to contest the second T20I against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club on Saturday, targeting an unassailable 2-0 series lead. The fixture follows a seven-wicket victory in the series opener, marking the first win for new captain Shreyas Iyer after a run of seven consecutive defeats in the role. The result provides a necessary boost to a side that endured a difficult tour of the United Kingdom, where they were whitewashed by Ireland and England.
The match places significant scrutiny on opener Abhishek Sharma, who is searching for form after a lean run of recent performances. Despite promising starts of 59 and 43 against England, Sharma has since scored 10, 16, 3, and 1 in subsequent matches. His eight-ball dismissal of one in the previous game highlighted concerns regarding his rhythm and confidence. With senior opener Sanju Samson absent from the current tour but retained in selectors’ plans for the Asian Games later this year, Sharma faces pressure to secure his position in a competitive T20 setup.
Conversely, the team has found a bright spot in teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
