Illinois turns to Duke with new defence under scrutiny

Illinois will take on Duke on Saturday after opening the 2026 season with a victory over UAB, but its preparations are focused on both continuity and correction.

Fifth-year transfer quarterback Katin Houser provided the clearest positive from the opener, throwing three touchdown passes and running for another. He completed the game with four incompletions and was not sacked.

Illinois will be without right guard Brandon Henderson against Duke, with the returning starter expected to miss the game and the possibility of a longer absence still unresolved.

The defence faces a more substantial adjustment. Thursday’s game marked the first under coordinator Boddy Hauck and his new 3-3-5 system, with Illinois making more than 85 defensive calls and carrying none directly over from the previous season.

UAB held possession for 41:03, compared with Illinois’ 18:57, and coach Bret Bielema acknowledged tackling problems after reviewing the game film. Bielema accepted responsibility for the shortfall.

Yahoo Sports reported that Illinois’ defensive backs are expected to be central to the unit, while the defensive line must improve as the team prepares for Duke and, eventually, Big Ten play.
