Hurricanes Level Stanley Cup Final With 5-3 Victory Over Golden Knights
Carolina Hurricanes defeat Vegas Golden Knights 5-3 to tie the NHL championship series at 2-2, with captain Jordan Staal scoring two goals including the winner.

The Carolina Hurricanes have levelled the Stanley Cup Final series at 2-2 with a 5-3 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday, setting the stage for Game Five in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Thursday. The win ends a tightly contested first half of the championship where every match had been decided by a single-goal margin, marking the first Stanley Cup Final in history where a multi-goal deficit was erased in each of the first four games.
A pivotal strategic decision by head coach Rod Brind’Amour proved decisive, as he benched starting goaltender Frederik Andersen, who had conceded four goals in Game Three, in favour of Brandon Bussi. Bussi, who had previously sparked a rally in Game Two, made his first career playoff start and recorded 18 saves. Brind’Amour confirmed that Andersen required rest and did not dress for the game, with Pyotr Kochetkov serving as the backup and Andersen listed as the emergency goaltender.
Carolina captain Jordan Staal scored two goals, including the game-winner, bringing his total to five goals in the first four games of the Final. A first-period goal made Staal, 37, the oldest player to score in the first four games of a Stanley Cup Final and the first since Mario Lemieux in 1992 to achieve five goals in that span. Staal secured the decisive moment with a backhanded shot after falling over, giving the Hurricanes a 4-3 lead with 13:28 remaining in the third period.
The Hurricanes established an early 2-0 lead through goals from Logan Stankoven and Jackson Blake, but Vegas mounted a comeback. William Karlsson and Brett Howden scored to tie the game at 3-3 by the end of the second period, continuing a trend where the Golden Knights had outscored Carolina 9-1 in the second frame throughout the series. Carolina regained control in the third period, with Staal’s power-play goal earlier in the game having provided a crucial buffer.
Carolina had not lost two consecutive games since mid-January and kept that run intact with a dominant third period. Nikolaj Ehlers scored an empty-net goal with 55 seconds remaining to seal the victory. The result shifts momentum back to North Carolina, where the Hurricanes will look to secure their first Stanley Cup since 2006, while the Golden Knights seek to defend the title they won in 2023.
