Hurricanes establish early dominance in Stanley Cup Final opener
The Carolina Hurricanes opened the 2026 Stanley Cup Final with a rapid strike, leveraging a strong postseason record against a Vegas squad with significant championship experience.

The Carolina Hurricanes set the tone for the 2026 Stanley Cup Final immediately, securing an early advantage against the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 1. Nikolaj Ehlers opened the scoring just 25 seconds into the first period at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, a moment that tied for the eighth-fastest goal in Stanley Cup Final history and the third-fastest to open a series.
Ehlers extended the Hurricanes' lead to 2-0 later in the contest with a breakaway goal from the blue line. The rapid start underscored Carolina’s offensive efficiency, continuing a trend where the team has scored first in six consecutive playoff games leading up to the final.
Entering the series as -152 money-line favourites, the Hurricanes arrived with a dominant 12-1 record in the postseason. Their performance in the opening match reflected a structured approach to the series, which follows a standard home-ice advantage format with Carolina hosting Games 1, 2, 5, and 7.
In contrast, the Vegas Golden Knights entered the final with a roster boasting 13 players possessing prior Stanley Cup Final experience, compared to only two for Carolina: Jordan Staal and William Carrier. Staal, who last won the Cup in 2009, could set an NHL record for the longest time between Stanley Cup championships as a player, surpassing Chris Chelios’s 16-year gap.
The Golden Knights are seeking to become only the fourth team to win at least two Cups in their first nine seasons. The match took place on Monday night, June 2, 2026, with puck drop scheduled for 8 p.m. ET and broadcast on ABC.
