iPhone users can use the Settings app to identify which apps are consuming the most battery, according to guidance from Engadget. The Battery menu includes usage charts and a ranked breakdown of consumption, with “View All Battery Usage” providing additional detail.

The list separates active “On Screen” use from “Background” activity, when an app continues using device resources away from the display. Location-enabled apps such as Weather and Google Maps, along with music-streaming services such as Apple Music and Spotify, can continue consuming power in the background.

Video, gaming, mapping and music streaming can all contribute to faster battery drain, particularly when they are used heavily. Reducing time spent in demanding apps may help extend runtime, although a highly ranked app is not necessarily malfunctioning.

Engadget also recommends selectively disabling Background App Refresh under Settings’ General section. The feature allows apps to update content when they are not being used, which can improve loading but consume additional resources.

Users can manage location access through Location Services under Privacy & Security. Restricting an app to “While Using the App” can prevent background GPS use, but disabling Location Services entirely may affect functions including Find My.

Battery condition should also be checked, as runtime can be affected by battery age, device model, software, signal strength and usage patterns. Engadget notes that replacing a battery in poor condition may be more effective than changing app settings alone.
