Modern laptops generally provide about four to 12 hours of battery life on a single charge, according to Engadget. The figures are approximate expectations rather than guarantees, with actual runtime shaped by the laptop model, workload, battery health, charger and surrounding conditions.
Premium thin laptops and Ultrabooks tend to sit at the upper end of the range, lasting about eight to 12 hours, with some reaching 15 hours under optimal conditions. Standard laptops generally last six to 10 hours, while budget models typically provide about four to seven hours.
Gaming laptops usually last considerably less, at roughly two to four hours. Gaming, video editing, streaming and 3D rendering are among the activities that place the greatest demands on a battery and can reduce runtime quickly.
Engadget says users may extend battery life by lowering screen brightness, closing unnecessary background applications and browser tabs, reducing the display refresh rate and enabling power-saving mode. That mode may need to be disabled for more demanding tasks.
Battery performance can also be affected by charging equipment and storage conditions. Engadget advises using suitable chargers and avoiding extreme temperatures, while noting that charging and battery-care outcomes can vary between laptop designs.
