Houston Cougars coach demands NIL parity amid spending disparity with LSU
The head coach argues that the university’s football competitiveness drives broader NIL investment, yet highlights a significant financial gap between Houston and LSU.

Houston Cougars head coach Kelvin Sampson has publicly called for increased financial support for the university’s basketball program through Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) funds. Sampson highlighted the significant financial disparity between Houston and LSU, referencing LSU coach Will Wade’s recent recruitment of players with professional experience. He argued that the success of the football program, led by Willie Fritz, generates NIL investment that benefits all sports, including basketball. Sampson also noted that when he joined the program in 2014, the basketball budget was comparable to smaller conferences, lacking the resources of major American Athletic Conference teams.
Sampson referenced a report by On3 journalist Chris Baldwin regarding Will Wade’s signings of players with professional experience, some of whom may no longer have college eligibility. Sampson compared Houston’s current financial capability to that of LSU, stating, "You know the difference financially between Houston and LSU? It’s not a bridge. It’s the Grand Canyon." The coach recalled the state of the basketball budget upon his arrival in 2014, comparing it to smaller conferences such as the Sun Belt or Horizon League, and specifically noting it was closer to Texas Southern than to major American Athletic Conference (AAC) peers.
Sampson addressed a video uploaded by Chris Baldwin to X/Twitter, in which he discussed the historical lack of funding and the frustration of stakeholders when results do not meet expectations despite limited resources. The report notes Sampson’s ongoing efforts to secure support, despite the team’s elimination in the Sweet 16 of the previous NCAA tournament.
