Honda eyes 2029 revival of cult-favourite Element as hybrid SUV
The Japanese automaker has not confirmed plans to reintroduce the boxy mini-SUV, stating it does not speculate on future product roadmaps.

Honda is reportedly considering a return to the compact SUV segment with a revived Element, positioned as an affordable hybrid model with a potential market debut in 2029. According to a report by Automotive News, the new vehicle would slot between the HR-V and CR-V in the manufacturer’s lineup, aiming to capitalise on the growing demand for smaller, off-road-capable vehicles.
The proposed model is intended to compete directly with rivals such as the Ford Bronco Sport. While Honda currently offers TrailSport trims for the CR-V and Passport, as well as rugged variants of the Pilot and Ridgeline, the company is seeking to broaden its appeal in the niche market for versatile, compact utility vehicles. The report indicates that production would take place at Honda’s Ohio factory, with the automaker targeting approximately 100,000 sales in the vehicle’s first full year on the market.
Speculative pricing suggests the new Element could launch in the $30,000 to $35,000 range, depending on final configuration and market positioning. This price point would make it a competitive option in the entry-level premium SUV sector. The original Element, known for its distinctive boxy design and utilitarian interior featuring removable rear seats and easy-to-clean surfaces, was discontinued in 2011 following declining sales but has retained a dedicated following among enthusiasts.
The potential revival comes at a time when Honda is navigating shifts in its product strategy. The company recently debuted three new electric vehicles that will not be sold in the United States, highlighting a complex global rollout strategy. A return of the Element as a hybrid, rather than an electric vehicle, could provide a bridge for consumers seeking alternative powertrains while maintaining the practicality associated with the brand’s traditional SUV offerings.
Despite the detailed reports, Honda has not officially confirmed the project. When contacted by Engadget regarding the speculation, a company spokesperson stated that while the Element has maintained a cult following since its discontinuation, the automaker does not engage in speculation about future product plans. The report was updated on June 24, 2026, to include this clarification, underscoring the unconfirmed nature of the timeline and specifications.
